Application Project Plan (APP) Planning Sheet

Name: Carrara Knoetgen and Danielle Rhone

Tentative Title: Weather Wiki
Target Audience: 7th Grade Life Science students

Science Curriculum Goals: Students will:
  • understand weather patterns and what causes them
  • identify cloud formations and determine what type of weather this may indicate
  • define what causes earth's seasons

Media Literacy Curriculum Goals:
Students will:
  • Communicate collaboratively using the wiki
  • Evaluate their sources of information for accuracy and bias
  • Exercise netiquette and cyber-safety strategies
  • Evaluate and debunk myths related to weather from various sources

Other Goals:
  • Model collaborative planning and instruction
  • Incorporate inquiry-based learning in science instruction

Proposed Activities:
  • Students will contribute to a wiki on the subject of weather
  • Students will research and evaluate myths about weather

Assessment/Evaluation (how will you know your APP works to meet your goals?):
Science Evaluation
  • Students will analyze a weather report from a week ago and explain whether or not it was accurate and why the meteorologist made the predictions he or she did
  • As a final product of their learning, each student group will prepare, direct, and film a weather report to the class.

Media Literacy Goals
  • The wiki postings will serve as evidence that the students have communicated collaboratively
  • We will have the students review the sources where they found the information to debunk or prove the weather myths.
  • We will observe the students' postings and use of the wiki to ensure netiquette and cyber-safety strategies are followed.

Resources/Support that will help you in your development of the APP:
  • Project LookSharp trainings and materials
  • WikiSpaces.com

Difficulties/Obstacles to developing your APP:
  • Finding shared collaboration time will be difficult

Planning Steps:
  • We will meet during the planned Project LookSharp conferences to work on the wiki
  • We will each contribute to the development of the wiki and its content on our own time
